Centre for Research in Art and Design

The Centre for Research in Art and Design has a well-established research record, specialising in practice-led research. Researchers operate across eight research groups that achieved 40% internationally excellent and world–leading research in REF 2014 and RAE 2008. 75% of staff were submitted in REF14 (Art and Design).

Across the Centre are eight research groups:

Each group operates both within the University and externally in collaboration with other researchers, curators, and relevant communities. Academics may be operating in one or more of the research groups, depending on their specialisms. There are currently 3 full-time and two 0.2 Professors and 2 full-time and two 0.6 Readers working within this area, alongside academics from across the School of Arts and Design. The Centre for Research in Art and Design works in partnership with Northumbria University forming the Northumbria – Sunderland Consortium, an AHRC funded CDT, which supports PhD scholarships for research students across the two institutions.
