Solo shows from 3 different glass artists
Petr Stanický, Richard Meitner and de la Torre Brothers,
Curator: Jeroen Maes, GlazenHuis
Artists Petr Stanický, Richard Meitner and the De La Torre Brothers have each been given space at National Glass Centre to present a ‘solo show’. The result is three exhibitions presenting great contrast in terms of glass making technique, artistic approach and cultural influence.
Petr Stanický - Another Space
Petr Stanický is a sculptor from the Czech Republic who trained at both the Academy of Arts Design and Architecture in Prague and at the New York Academy of Arts.
Petr Stanický explores space and shape as a reflection of human existence using glass and mixed media to encourage us to consider our surroundings. At National Glass Centre he has responded to the architectural space of our Long Gallery and the upper floor entrance ramp creating new site-specific works and sculptural objects.
Richard Meitner - Twice Upon A Time
Acknowledged internationally as a master of glass Richard Meitner’s work represents emotions that cannot be expressed in words. Using simple pure form it combines humour, science and humanity with strong but delicately balanced colour and material combinations. The majority of work shown has been created for this exhibition and represents the most recent development in his practice.
Richard Meitner moved from the United States to the Netherlands in 1972 to study at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy where he went on to teach and inspire a new generation of international artists. He currently teaches at Universidade Nove De Lisboa.
de la Torre Brothers - New World Primitives
The Mexican brothers Jamex and Einar de la Torre work collaboratively in hot glass but are also known for their use of media including lenticular print, found objects and cast resin. Their work reflects cultural influence, most notably Mexican folk and popular culture and Catholicisim, alongside reflections on the identity of other cultures they have engaged with.
The de la Torre Brother’s work reflects their personalities. It is sensitive, objective and dynamic with a healthy serving of humour.
The exhibition was curated by Jeroen Maes, Artistic Director at GlazenHuis, the Flemish Centre for Contemporary Glass Art. It was originally shown at GlazenHuis during the summer of 2013 and has been revised by Jeroen Maes forNational Glass Centre.
This exhibition has been realised with the support of Czech Centre London
