The Business Pitch 2019

Explore your business idea or take your start-up to the next level with The Business Pitch 2019, the exciting video pitch competition inspiring student and graduate entrepreneurs.

The University of Sunderland has partnered with Santander Universities to launch The Business Pitch 2019 Competition supporting our student and graduate entrepreneurs. This exciting pitching competition is open to all current University of Sunderland students and alumni who graduated from 2018 onwards.

The competition is split into two distinct categories which are designed to reflect different stages of the entrepreneurial journey. They are:

1. Bright Ideas 

Have a business idea? Then this is the competition for you! The bright ideas category is for those who want to explore a business or freelance venture but are not at the stage of launching.

Prizes

–First Place will receive a £200 cash prize to be used to develop the winner's business idea. The winner will also gain 'fast-tracked' Enterprise Place membership.

–Runner up will receive a £50 cash prize. The runner up will also gain 'fast-tracked' Enterprise Place membership to help explore and develop their business.

Things to think about in your pitch:

  • What makes your idea unique and stand out from the competition? What is your unique selling point?
  • Who are you going to sell your product or service to? Who is your target market?
  • How much is starting your business going to cost? How much does it cost to make your product or service?
  • How are you going to make money? When will you start to make money?


2. Ones to Watch
 

Looking to take your start-up to the next level? Ones to Watch is here to help push your business forward and support you in making your next move. This category is for businesses that are already registered and have been trading for less than 12 months. Applicants for the Competition must own a majority share in a registered business and be responsible for the direction and leadership of the business.

Prizes

– First Place will receive a £500 cash prize to help enhance their start-up. The winner will also gain "fast-tracked" Enterprise Place membership and an invitation to an exclusive business networking event.

– Runner up will receive a £250 cash prize to help enhance their start-up. The runner up will also gain "fast-tracked" Enterprise Place membership.

Things to think about in your pitch:

  • What is your Value Proposition? How do you create value for your customers?
  • Who are your customers and beneficences? How do you interact with them?
  • What is your cost structure? What fixed and variable costs do you need to consider?
  • What are your sources of revenue?   

 

How do I enter?

Entering The Business Pitch 2019 could not be easier! The application process for The Business Pitch 2019 is split into two parts:
 

1. The Application Form

You will be asked to complete an application form to support your video pitch which can be found below or by clicking the "Apply Now" button above. You will be asked a selection of generic data capture questions (name, course, student ID etc.) and a series of questions related to your registered business or business idea. It is important to include as much information as possible in this section as it will be referred to in the judging!
 

2. The Video Pitch

The video pitch is a chance for you to showcase your business and wow the judges. The pitch should last no more than two minutes and should be uploaded with your application.

Judges will evaluate your pitch according to the following criteria:

  • Degree of innovation
  • Value to customer
  • Market potential
  • Unique selling point
  • How sustainable is the business model
