Leadership in modern times

Professor Monika Foster is our Head of School for Business and Management at the University of Sunderland. Since joining us a few years ago Monika has led our teaching teams and taught our students on a wide variety of courses within the school.

We spoke to Monika about some of the challenges she has faced throughout her career journey, including being an international academic, leadership styles, and advances in technology impacting work/life balance.

Career journey

Having started out her career in Poland, Monika is proud to be an international academic and feels this has been a key theme of her teaching and learning to date.

Within the podcast, Monika discusses her research interests which have focused on internationalization, globalization, and how we can enhance the experience of international students when settling in to studying in another country.

Leadership styles and role models

Monika reflects on how her leadership styles have developed throughout her career and what skills are important to have, she also discusses one of her female role models in business.

"When I got back into academia, I then used my experience to develop business programmes with connections to industry. I was very interested at that time, and continue to be, in that aspect of international intercultural leadership and management."
