BSc (Hons) Midwifery Practice has just landed at the University of Sunderland! The highly anticipated and long-awaited course is now open for applications.

Midwifery Practice is the latest course to join the University’s School of Nursing and Health Sciences, and for the first time, students will be able to study this rewarding profession right in the heart of Sunderland.

Working in partnership with local NHS Foundation Trusts, the course is designed to provide students with a woman/person centered approach to midwifery care. The course is unique in that it focuses on mental health within maternity and allows students the opportunity to explore the role of a midwife in supporting women/persons and their families with mental health issues.

Facilities

You’ll be based within our Living Lab and Helen McArdle House at our City Campus. Both facilities have benefited from multimillion-pound investment in recent years and house some of the latest equipment and technology including mock hospital wards, the immersive suite, clinical labs and much more. Take a look at this video to find out more about our excellent facilities.

We also have a bespoke Midwifery Suite which allows students to practice and develop their skills in a safe and controlled environment. The suite is kitted out with lots of advanced simulation manikins such as SimMom and SimBaby, complete with birthing and lactation functions.

The Midwifery Suite is completed by a mock maternity ward, postnatal room, water birth room complete with a birthing pool and birthing ball, and a home birth room which can be used to mimic home births and also used for perinatal mental health sessions.

Placements

As a midwifery student, not only will you study on campus, but you’ll also spend 50% of your time on clinical placement at one of our partner NHS Foundation Trusts. Placements will take place at all levels, from the first to final year of your degree, ensuring you are well prepared for the world of work.
