Daniel Hindmarsh

Quality Analyst – Caterpillar Articulated Trucks, Peterlee

Engineering Practice

Daniel Hindmarsh started at Caterpillar working on the shop floor, progressing to work in Quality, and after studying his HNC & HND; he wanted to develop his skills further by studying a degree. Daniel had intended to enrol on a traditional degree, however after being introduced to the Degree Apprenticeship, decided that was the best route for him as it combined classroom work with on-the-job training, gaining real-world experience in all areas of Manufacturing Engineering.

“The apprenticeship has surpassed my expectations, rather than just focusing on the degree, the course also focused on ensuring key skills, knowledge and behaviours were met, to ensure I not only received the academic qualifications but that I had proven to be a competent engineer.

“I really enjoy the fact that tasks vary day to day – no two days are the same. Learning at the University of Sunderland was great, with it being a local university it was easy to travel to and I have enjoyed meeting new people as well as developing new and existing skills.

“I would encourage others to do an apprenticeship as you gain valuable real-world experience enabling you to perform as a competent engineer. I have gained greater critical analysis skills, being able to see things from different points of view rather than a one-track mind. I also have a broader knowledge of engineering operations."
