I chose to study BSc (Hons) Learning Disability Nursing Practice at the University of Sunderland as the teaching is of a high standard, and produces very competent, knowledgeable, and skilful nurses. An added advantage for me is that the University is close to my home, so my travel time is minimal.
Before coming to the University of Sunderland, I worked in a variety of jobs in the care sector. In my last job, I was a support worker for a local care organisation, supporting service-users who had a variety of complex learning disabilities. I wanted to make a difference in people lives and support them to achieve the best outcomes.
My favourite part of the course was getting to experience practice placements, and I have enjoyed all of them. I feel I have learned a lot in working alongside experienced and committed nurses and other medical professionals. Each placement was educational, satisfying and illuminating. At the beginning of the course, I was a little anxious since I had not studied in a long time, but I received a lot of support, advice and guidance from teaching staff. One key area I was supported in was the writing of essays and the completion and delivery of presentations. I have also benefited from having supportive and enthusiastic student nurses in my cohort who have helped make my student journey enjoyable.
My advice for prospective students is to be resilient, tenacious, and well organized. Do not be put off by minor setbacks. Use your time wisely and do not leave anything until the last minute! Utilise the great support that is available to you from teaching staff and the library staff who can offer great support around referencing and guidance on academic work.
In the future, I am open to any opportunity where I will be able to use my new skills to support and take care of individuals with learning disabilities. Studying at the University of Sunderland has been a very satisfying experience. The period of dislocation owing to the Covid-19 pandemic was challenging, but the support I received from staff during that difficult time was brilliant."
