Case Study

Suzanne Gair

Sunderland, UK

BSc (Hons) Sociology with Integrated Foundation Year

After many years of employment, Suzanne Gair decided she wanted a career change. Our Integrated Foundation Year course in Sociology was the perfect opportunity for Suzanne to get back into education.

The University of Sunderland provided me with the opportunity to reenter education after many years of employment and gave me a route towards a very much sought after career change. It is also in my hometown so a perfect location for me as a single parent with no geographical mobility.

I was a manager within a few different industries before deciding to enter education full-time and was very unfulfilled by my career. I have also studied Business Studies via distance learning but decided not to pursue this further. I now have a strong idea of where I want my career and life to go and I was never able to develop this understanding before coming to the University.

I have enjoyed meeting new people my own age and making new friends. I have also enjoyed the content of the course which has expanded my knowledge on many important global issues. As well as this, the opportunities it has provided me to get involved in other aspects of university life, such as an internship and the SU Communities, has been great. On top of this, I received study literature and a grant to buy books and other materials, and my tuition fee was also heavily discounted.

I would absolutely recommend the University of Sunderland to other students, it is an ideal place to grow and learn for people from all walks of life. I would say to try every opportunity that comes your way. I did this and have had many rich experiences.

Studying at the University of Sunderland has been the best decision I've ever made."

Please note, this course is not recruiting for 2023/24.
