Whether you’re looking at what course to study at university or you’re already in education, you’ll inevitably start thinking about what career path you want to embark on after graduation.
One of the best things about studying a degree in a business management subject is that your career and employment options are incredibly open. Over the three or four years of study you’ll develop personal and professional skills that employers in a wide range of sectors will be seeking. In this article we’ll look at some of the skills you’ll gain and what professions our graduates have gone on to.
Transferable skills
We’ve recently completely overhauled our Business and Management curriculum based on feedback from students and employers. As part of this we’ve deliberately incorporated more aspects that we know employers are looking for from our graduates.
As the world of technology is moving at such a rapid pace, we’ve incorporated technologies across our courses to make sure you graduate confident using digital platforms in a business context. Our Business courses will also be adopting a hybrid model of teaching where lectures will be delivered online and our workshops and seminars will be delivered face-to-face. Both elements of this teaching style will allow you to develop your digital skills and your networking skills as part of on-campus projects.
Our graduates
We know that our graduates have gone on to work in a huge range of industries; these industries include tourism, rail, finance, automotive and healthcare. We take a look at where some of our graduates are now.
After graduating from the BA Business and Management in 2019, Hélder Costa secured a role as Director of International Newcastle (IN). During his studies and after Hélder has become an active and engaged member of the local community and has played an important role representing the younger generation’s interests at a local, national and international level.
Hélder also took on a strategic role for a year in University of Sunderland Student’s Union, his diverse range of experiences have given him plenty to talk about in job applications and interviews! Recently, we’ve also seen Hélder back at the University to give a guest lecture on his career progression so far and how his background and age makes him a unique and valuable advisor on the boards he has a place on.

Another of our graduates, Liam Coulson graduated from the BA Business and Management course in 2011 and since then he’s been working at the ferry operator, DFDS. Liam utilised the University’s Careers and Employment service and originally started at DFDS on a 3-month contract. Since graduating he’s worked his way up the ranks and utilised some of the business and marketing elements of his degree along the way. Liam now manages all of the DFDS websites and a team who are spread across Europe.
Liam reflected on his time at the University of Sunderland and said “The courses were a great mix of all business aspects, from business law to online marketing. We were then able to choose modules for the third year, so I was able to choose online marketing modules as I felt that was the most interesting aspect of marketing.”
