Scholarships available to postgraduate students

As the cost of living is increasing, we understand how expensive postgraduate study can be right now. We offer a range of scholarships and bursaries that are available to postgraduate students, from tuition fee discounts to subject-specific cash scholarships to support your learning.

Alumni Loyalty Scheme 2023/24

What it is:
20% waiver on the full cost of course fees to reward loyal alumni who return to study a postgraduate degree at the University.

Who it's for:
Alumni (graduates of the University) who enrol on a full or part-time postgraduate course (MA, MSc, LLM, MBA, MPhil, PhD, DProf, DBA, EdD, or PhD by Existing or Creative Works) delivered at either of our Sunderland campuses starting between 1 August 2023 and 31 July 2024.

North East Postgraduate Discount 2023/24

What it is:
20% fee waiver on the full cost of course fees for postgraduate taught masters programmes of study MA, MSc, LLM, MBA

Who it's for:
The North East Postgraduate Discount aims to support the north-east region in its response to the current cost-of-living challenges through the provision of affordable opportunities for individuals to upskill and boost their career opportunities. The discount is for students impacted by cost-of-living challenges who have a local connection to the north-east region.  This includes anyone who has graduated with an undergraduate degree from any university in the north-east in academic years 2020/21, 2021/22, or 2022/23.

International Scholarship 2023/24

What it is:
£1,400 tuition fee reduction (undergraduates) or £900 tuition fee reduction (postgraduates).

Who it's for:
All international students studying on-campus undergraduate and postgraduate courses excluding preparation courses such as foundation courses, EAP or pre masters.

Which intakes:
Students starting with us in September, October, November 2023, January, February, April, June 2024.

We Care Bursary 2023/24

What it is:
£2,000 cash bursary for each year of study (excluding placement year) for care-experienced or estranged students.

Who it's for:
For UK home students studying a full-time undergraduate or a full-time taught postgraduate course. Please note this bursary is available to estranged students under the age of 25 on 1 September 2023, and care-experienced students of all ages.

The Robson Art and Design Masters Award

What it is:
£1,000 financial assistance to help students complete their course.

Who it's for:
Masters level students in Glass, Ceramics, Photography, Design or Fine Art. Students must have a firm offer and meet specific scholarship criteria.

The Mike Davies Innovation Scholarship

What it is:
Two £1,000 scholarships per academic year

Who it's for:
Full or part-time students studying BA (Hons) Artist Designer Maker: Glass and Ceramics (Stage 1 and 2), MA Visual Practice (Glass and Ceramics pathways), PhD Glass and Ceramics. Awarded to allow students to undertake a project or opportunity that will lead to innovative uses of glass or ceramics for creative use.

The Richard Lynn Studham Scholarship

What it is:
An annual scholarship of £2,000.

Who it's for:

Full-time/part-time Home/EU/OS students studying at Sunderland Campus. Applications must be received by 9 September 2022.

Aziz Foundation Scholarship 2023/24

What is it:
Full tuition fee scholarship plus extra benefits from the Aziz Foundation.

Who it’s for:
British Muslims studying eligible Masters level programmes who wish to advance in their careers and bring positive change to their communities and beyond. Please note that this scholarship is awarded by the Aziz Foundation, not the University of Sunderland.

Futures Fund Student Opportunity Scholarship

What it is:
Up to £750

Who it's for:
Any full or part-time student studying at the University of Sunderland.

The Silver Fund

What it is:
Up to £2,500

Who it's for:
Staff or students studying at the University of Sunderland which directly enhances and enriches the student experience at the University above and beyond business as usual.
