Overview

This course integrates Environment and Health and Safety roles which are increasingly combined or complementary in business. An additional advantage to this course is the IOSH accreditation which satisfies the needs and expectations of many employers.

The distance learning format allows you to study when and where you like. Our academic staff will guide you through the course and provide the support you need, no matter where you are based. You will be taught by academic staff who have wide practical experience as well as active research interests. Research specialisms include behavioural safety, air pollution and contaminated land.

Course structure

Our teaching and learning methods include web-based reading materials which are also printable, e-books, e-journals, multimedia and e-discussions. You will be part of our on line community.

All students will receive 6 weeks induction to become familiar with the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and to develop the academic skills required for MSc/PgD level of study.

Modules on this course include:

Core modules:

  • Introduction to Environment, Health and Safety (30 credits)

Gain an introduction to EHS including the drivers for change, legislation, topical issues, and identification of hazards together with an introduction to the legislative framework and management systems.

  • Environment, Health and Safety Assessment (30 credits)

Cover a range of techniques that can be used to assess the risk to both the environment and employee health and safety of a range of hazards.

  • Control and Management of Environment, Health and Safety Risks (30 credits)

Study the means by which EHS risks can be managed together with an evaluation of the effectiveness of the means chosen. Communication of hazards and their associated risks will also form a key part of this module.

  • Research Methods and Professional Practice: Dissertation (30 credits)

Focus on data analysis, research skills and professional practice covering a range of research skills. It will also include a range of professional practice skills to meet the requirements of the IOSH core curriculum as well as the requirements of employers.

  • Research Project (60 credits)

Undertake a research project where you will research and design a piece of primary research. Negotiate a topic that reflects your personal interests and career aspirations as well as our supervisory expertise.

  • As a distance-learning student, you'll be able to remotely access online journals, articles and e-books.

    The library team offer real-time online help through ‘Live Chat’ at various periods throughout the day, and they also offer online tutorials to help you make the most of our electronic resources.

  • This course can be studied anywhere in the world that has internet access. The course is delivered by Canvas - the University's Virtual Learning Environment. You will use learning and reading packs, e-books, e-journals, relevant websites and multimedia.

    You will have full access to our libraries and, as a distance learning student, you will particularly benefit from our web-based ‘Discover’ search tool. This helps you gain remote access to online journals, articles and e-books – whenever and wherever you happen to be studying.

The distance learning route allows you the flexibility to choose where and when you study. You will need internet access to use our Virtual Learning Environment where you will join our online community.

Entry requirements

We usually require applicants to hold an undergraduate degree with a classification of 2:2 or above, in any subject. Applicants who have relevant experience and who can demonstrate their suitability for the course should contact the programme leader to discuss any potential application.

Fees and finance

The fee for the MSc route is:

  • £4,180 for UK and EU students
  • £7,650 for international students

The fee for the PgD route is:

  • £2,787 for UK and EU students
  • £5,100 for international students

Employment

Environment, health and safety roles have become integral to the sustainability of organisations around the world. Increasingly employers require proven expertise in health, safety and environmental systems, an in-depth knowledge of relevant legislation and standards, and the ability to work effectively with others in order to take proactive measures and to communicate with stakeholders. Employees are also expected to be members of professional bodies such as IOSH. 

The PgD course will provide you with all the skills and knowledge required for a variety of EHS roles. 

A Masters degree will additionally enhance your opportunities in more strategic positions, academic roles or further study towards a PhD.
