Case Study

Callum Cairns

Sunderland's excellent reputation for Computing convinced Callum Cairns to stay in his home city when choosing a university, a decision that has led to him gaining employment in a variety of different IT roles.

I was aware of the University of Sunderland's fantastic reputation, particularly in the field of computing. Being from the Sunderland area I wanted to make the most of the opportunities presented to me in the area.

I found that the course I studied really helped prepare me for life after university. The course had been tailored to provide enough experience so that the students would be able to go out into the industry and make valued contributions. As well as equipping the students with technical knowledge, the modules would also work to build on soft skills such as teamwork, leadership and communication.

I would definitely recommend the University of Sunderland to potential students. I enjoyed my experience there as I felt as though the University offered a well-rounded student experience i.e courses, advice and guidance, campus and facilities.

Look at what the University can offer you. The support you receive during your studies to get the best qualification you can as well as the support offered in terms of career guidance and next steps are excellent.

Since graduating I have been employed in the IT industry and have worked in a variety of different roles. My main role at the moment involves working with students in local universities, schools and colleges; I’d like to continue working in this area as its very satisfying helping to generate interest amongst young people in regards to their post-education options.

Working on my final year dissertation project was probably one of the hardest things I’ve done to date, however it was definitely one of the most rewarding experiences. I worked alongside a local primary school in order to develop an application which would support the growth of fine motor skills amongst pre-school aged children. While this took a huge amount of time and effort to design/develop and write up a dissertation on this, it was great to see the end result and know that I had hopefully helped my target audience.

My experience at the University of Sunderland was very well rounded and I was able to develop skills which will help me to progress in my career.
