Case Study

David King

BSc (Hons) Network Computing graduate David King worked for Google during his studies and subsequently landed a fantastic job as a Technology Solutions Analyst at leading nutrition, health and wellness giants Nestlé.

Studying Network Computing at Sunderland gives you so many things to explore, from routing and switching essentials to scaling larger networks. The course allows you to work together to implement and troubleshoot networks and the lecturers at Sunderland support you every step of the way.

The course also gives you the opportunity to gain Cisco Certified Network Associate Routing and Switching certification (CCNA) qualification, which is absolutely invaluable and complements the course perfectly.

I thoroughly enjoyed the practical elements of the course, as well as learning all about the different layers that make up a network. Being able to put the theory into practice, using Sunderland’s great computing facilities, is so important in developing your networking skills.

You also get to study a detailed variety of programming concepts that really encourage you to think creatively. It's this strong blend of networking and programming that makes the course challenging but rewarding.

Additionally, I enjoy my role with Google responding to, troubleshooting and resolving customer issues with Google products. This also involves working with Google to advocate for product changes or test new features.

I spent my placement year at Nestlé, and after graduation I was offered a place on their Graduate Scheme. My work covers IT support, maintenance and project delivery for all factory and office sites across the UK and Ireland.

There are economic benefits in choosing to study at Sunderland, with various bursaries and scholarships available and the local area offers business opportunities, no matter what degree you pursue. My advice would be to grab those opportunities with both hands and really challenge yourself."
