Louay Fayek


MSc Telecommunications Engineering graduate Louay Fayek credits the University for equipping him with the knowledge and approach needed to start his professional career. He has since landed roles with technology shapers Ericsson and Three UK.

The excellent reputation of the University with regards to international courses, quality of education and facilities, all played a role in me choosing to study here.

The best aspects were the content and structure of the course as well as the support I received from the professors.

I would advise students to seize every moment of their time here in gaining knowledge from the highly reputable professors, as well as enjoying their time during their studies since the city has a lot to offer. I would recommend the University of Sunderland to friends especially those from abroad.

Since graduating in January 2013, I spent a couple of months abroad in Beirut and Dubai. Immediately after my return to the UK, I started my search for work.

In 2013, I was offered a job with Ericsson as an Optimisation Service Engineer. I stayed with Ericsson for two and a half years, during which I worked in the field trials team. My main responsibilities were to test and introduce new systems, hardware, software and features to the live network of two major mobile operators (Three UK and EE).

In 2015, I accepted an offer from Three UK to join their RAN (Radio Access Network) design team, and I’ve been working for them since. My job focuses on the different design aspects for 4G as well as 3G services. It is an extremely challenging role as all of my team members have more than 10 years of experience. This situation raises the bar of expectations but also give me the thrill to learn more and benefit from their experience.

I would sum up my experience at Sunderland as life changing. In addition to gaining an MSc degree, the University equipped me with the knowledge and approach needed to start my professional career.
