Case Study

Bex Ross

Bex Ross knew she wanted to stay in the North East to top up her foundation degree to a full BA (Hons) in Graphic Design; the University of Sunderland had the best course to suit her needs.

I studied a foundation degree at Newcastle College but I wanted to top it up to a full BA. I knew I wanted to remain in the North East as I love the vibrancy of the region and the University of Sunderland had the best course to suit my needs.

I attended an open day and spoke to one of the course leaders who made me feel really welcome. The course was only a year long however I didn’t feel like it was too much or too little. We had amazing support from the lecturers, opportunities to do placements, visit exhibitions, attend workshops and receive lectures and talks from industry professionals. I really feel like they helped us get our careers on the go!

Another positive was the facilities on offer - we had all the equipment we could need and more and the technical staff trained us to do anything we wanted.

I would absolutely recommend the University of Sunderland to other students. The support, facilities and taught subjects are all world class and helped me to get where I am today and realise what I wanted to do.

My advice to prospective students would be – explore! We were encouraged to explore different techniques and processes on the course and it was so much fun. I learnt a lot from it and I still do now. Getting out of your comfort zone can open so many doors for you. Explore the options of placements and internships while you’re studying as they will give you invaluable real-world experience which will give you an edge over other graduates when you finish.

After graduating I started a graduate internship with the University as a Design and Marketing Assistant within sport. I’d always had a keen interest in sport, having played ice hockey from a young age, but I’d never thought that I could still have a career in design that would link my love of sport, until this internship. Four months after I was offered a permanent position elsewhere as a Graphic Designer which is where I am now.

My time at Sunderland was a whirlwind - I did so much, it went by too fast but I had so much fun!"
