MA TESOL Distance Learning

Edwina Thornton wanted to be more competitive in the job market and decided the MA TESOL distance learning course was her best option. She is currently working as a EAP Teaching Fellow at Nazarbayev University and credits her career to her MA TESOL at Sunderland.

I was working as an EAP/ESL instructor and wanted to be more competitive in the job market and improve my teaching knowledge theory. I chose to study at the University of Sunderland because it offered exactly what I was looking for – a postgraduate qualification in TESOL with distance learning.

The best part of the course for me was the monitoring by tutors and the peer/tutor feedback. I would advise other students studying distance-learning to focus on your time management skills and self-discipline, especially if you are working full time and have a heavy teaching/exam load.

Graduating with MA TESOL coincided with the decision to leave the country where I had lived and taught for over 20 years. Applying for jobs abroad with my MA TESOL gave me more opportunities and better positions. In the workplace itself, the MA offered me far more advantages than those teachers with a BA/CELTA/DELTA.

My experience at Sunderland was challenging but engaging. The support from module and thesis tutors was excellent. I have had many occasions since graduating to appreciate the value of my MA TESOL. I am currently working as an EAP Teaching Fellow at Nazarbayev University on the pre-Master’s programme which would not have been possible without my MA TESOL from Sunderland.”
