I wanted to stay in the North East of England, where I’ve lived all of my life, but I also wanted to choose the right course – University of Sunderland offered my favourite subjects in the right combination and had a highly regarded Media department, which appealed to me.
I went to university straight from sixth form college. I wasn’t sure about going to university at all beforehand, but it proved to be the right decision. The staff were very friendly, approachable and knowledgable. The course was also fun because it attracted students from all over the UK and the world.
I volunteered at a charity after graduating and got a job there shortly after – all the while I continued to study for an MA and then a PhD. I now work for a research consultancy which evaluates work in the public, voluntary and private sectors – I use the research skills I learned at the University every day (e.g. interview techniques, surveys, report writing)."
