Case Study

James Corker

An excellent reputation for media, great industry links, and the support from approachable staff convinced James Corker that the University of Sunderland was the right place to study BA (Hons) Film and Media.

The course is theory based with options to focus on different modules. The flexibility led me towards scriptwriting and I now spend most of my free time working on script ideas as well as a novel. I hope to move into scriptwriting long-term after graduating, and I’ve really been encouraged by the staff to find my own style.

I am also a member of the University’s Cine Club which is an informal meeting of cinema lovers made up of staff and students. We get to choose different genres of films which we watch at the David Puttnam Media Centre and then meet afterwards to discuss the movie itself. These range from classic old movies and world cinema to science fiction and action movies. Cine Club has had a great impact on the way I watch and enjoy movies and is helping me refine my approach to scriptwriting.

I’m enjoying studying at Sunderland so much I’m planning to stay on to study at Masters level to really give me the best chance to further my goals."
