MBChB Medicine

Ellen O’Brien has always been interested in medicine. She grew up in the North East and knew she wanted to give back to her community, so began researching local medical schools. After attending an Open Day at the University of Sunderland, and being so impressed by the campus and facilities, she knew it was the place for her. Her favourite part of the course is anything practical, especially the placements on offer.

I have always been interested in medicine and knew it was what I wanted to do from an early age. I grew up in the North East and when I was applying for medical schools, I knew that I really wanted to be able to give back to my community, so it was important that I could stay near my family. I had been looking around local medical schools when my parents told me that Sunderland had recently opened one. I booked a place at an Open Day and was so amazed by the campus and the facilities Sunderland had to offer that I chose to study there after attending the Open Day. When I got the offer from Sunderland, I knew it was the right medical school for me.

I absolutely love my course; I love the anatomy practicals, especially when we use the anatomage table and I also really enjoy our problem-based learning cases. I enjoy anything practical we get to do on the course – the labs and clinical skills sessions are so much fun! The placements are one of the many highlights of studying medicine at the University of Sunderland – we've already had some practical GP placements which have enabled us to see exactly what the day-to-day life of a doctor is like. There is a real sense of community in the medical school, which makes it such a nice atmosphere to learn in and the staff are amazing, they are experts in their fields and give really interesting lectures.

My experience of studying at the University of Sunderland has been amazing. The course is better than I ever dreamed it could be and I have felt extremely well supported throughout this year. I can’t wait to see what the next 4 years bring – I couldn’t imagine ever studying medicine anywhere else!”
