Niall McArdle

Former professional footballer, Niall McArdle, came from Ireland to play at Sunderland Football Club at the age of 16. Niall is now studying BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science at Sunderland and is gaining a fantastic insight into the ever-growing sector.

I came to Sunderland aged 16 when I signed a three year professional contract with Sunderland Football Club. Unfortunately my contract did not get renewed. I was always realistic and knew the likelihood of having a long, successful career in football was slim, so going to university was my plan B.

I’m now studying on the BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Sciences, and the University of Sunderland really is a great university. My course gives a fantastic insight into the ever-growing, ever-changing world of sports and exercise science, and there is a good balance between lecture and lab time."
