Lingjia Guan

International Tourism and Hospitality graduate Lingjia Guan's decision to study abroad at Sunderland allowed her to experience a new culture and education system, as well as take advantage of a highly rewarding placement year.

I knew I wanted to study a tourism-related degree, and so I researched universities online. I found that Sunderland performed really well in the subject in university league tables, and living in the North-East was also very appealing to me, with its special local culture and great transport links.

I’ve been fortunate enough to enjoy a varied placement year at the Intercontinental London Park Lane Hotel as part of my course, gaining experience in a number of different roles across the location. This included events experience at a dedicated conference and events suite, the Wellington Lounge situated at Queen Elizabeth’s former Piccadilly residence, and the Arch Bar, which has 40 varieties of gin on the menu! I have applied theoretical knowledge to a real working environment and developed my skills in communication, time management and teamwork.

My family encouraged me to study abroad and experience different education systems to further my future career and I’m glad they did. Experiencing new cultures and foods and making friends from all over the world really excites me, it’s great to learn and exchange experiences and ideas with new people. I’d encourage other students to do the same; come to Sunderland and study in a brilliant environment, meet friendly and professional staff and enjoy a wonderful social life.
