Study a degree that's well respected by industry leaders

This is a demanding, competitive and rapidly changing sector, so gaining a high-quality degree that helps you stand out from the crowd is essential. Here at the University of Sunderland, four of our courses are accredited by The Institution of Engineering and Technology, which will help you do just that:

This accreditation will help make you more employable, and if you take one of our accredited courses, you will be able to fast track the process to becoming a Chartered Engineer. You can be sure of a top-class learning environment in which we will equip you with the skills and ideas needed to make an impact in the industry right away.

Thrive in cutting-edge facilities

Here at Sunderland, we believe your learning shouldn’t be limited to the classroom. That's why you'll have access to industry-standard laboratories and fully-functioning workshops, allowing you to gain the vital practical experience that employers crave.

The University has recently invested over £1 million in state-of-the-art engineering facilities. Choose Sunderland and you’ll benefit from upgraded mechanical engineering, materials engineering, automotive engineering and electronic and electrical engineering laboratories. These facilities allow the University to further develop our strong industry links and enable you to reach your full potential in becoming a technically-skilled, problem-solving engineer, capable of making both social and industrial impact.

As well as dedicated engineering laboratories, you will also be able to take advantage of our state-of-the-art metrology suite, specialist engineering software including CAD, and library, equipped with dedicated engineering resources. You will be surrounding yourself in a stimulating department that produces world-leading research.

Europe’s most productive car plant, run by Nissan Manufacturing (UK) Ltd, is based in Sunderland, meaning the city is leading the way in the automotive and manufacturing sectors.

Gain real-world experience

To further enhance employability, we encourage on-campus undergraduate students to apply for a 48-week placement where available before your final year. Placements are usually paid, with past students having earned an average salary of £14,000-£18,000 a year depending on location. These are an excellent opportunity to put your learning into practice and understand the context for your new knowledge.

The contacts made during placements can also be valuable for future job offers. Recent graduates and placement students have been employed in companies including; Nissan, Hitachi, GlaxoSmithKline, Jaguar Land Rover Automotive, Scottish Power and Network Rail.
