Postcodes
The postcode varies depending on your destination, common locations include:
- City Campus: SR1 3SD
- Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s: SR6 0DD
- Panns Bank: SR1 1XS
- Scotia Quay: SR1 2RH
- The Precinct: SR2 7PS
- Northern Academy of Music Education (NAME): SR1 3HA
Register your vehicle
The University operates a cashless parking system that allows staff and students to pay by the following methods:
- Via the JustPark app which is available via Google Play or iTunes, if you have a smartphone
- By following the directions on car parking signs if you do not have a smartphone
- By paying in advance using the JustPark(opens in new tab) website
- By using the two cashless parking terminals at the northern entrance to Edinburgh Gateway building on City Campus or the southern entrance to Reg Vardy Centre on Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's.
Please note that parking costs, once paid, are transferable between each campus. A registered vehicle also entitles the holder to park for free in the University car parks on evenings and weekends.
If you ride a bicycle or motorcycle to work, you can park on-campus for free.
Corporate travel passes are available for staff, which will make your journey by public transport even more affordable.
If you need to change the details of your registered vehicle because you have moved house or changed your car for example, please email parkingservices@sunderland.ac.uk with the details of your registered vehicle and the relevant changes. Estates and Facilities staff will then amend the details.
Blue Badge
If you’re a Blue Badge holder, you can register your vehicle for university Blue Badge parking. This enables you to park for free, in designated disabled parking bays on campus.
University accommodation
If you’re living in university accommodation, you must register your vehicle. This entitles you to free parking at your contracted accommodation site. Students whose vehicles are registered at the accommodation are allowed to park on teaching campuses between 8am–5pm on weekdays at the registered vehicle rate of £1.60 per hour or £6 for the full day however, we would encourage you to use the University’s free campus bus and Connect service.
Park and Ride
You can park and ride(opens in new tab) for free at selected Metro stations. At other locations, such as the Stadium of Light, parking costs £1.50 per day, with monthly season tickets available for £16. All spaces are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking at the Stadium of Light car park is free for up to two hours, except on match days. This may be a convenient option for staff and students who wish to walk to campus or take the 700 bus(opens in new tab) which is free with a valid campus ID Card. If you need to park for more than two hours, charges will apply. For full details, visit the Sunderland AFC car parking website.
Reserved or corporate parking
Reserved parking is available for corporate and VIP visitors to the University on a first-come first-served basis. There are eight bays at City Campus adjacent to the Gateway building and three bays at the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's in the east car park, adjacent to the Media Centre.
These bays can only be booked for:
- Corporate visitors
- External visitors to the university
- Press
- Deans/Directors attending meetings on the opposite campus. Please note that your vehicle must be registered to park at the University and parking must be paid for
- Unpaid Visiting Lecturers/tutors.
Please note that executive parking requirements will be allocated as a priority in periods of high demand.
Bays cannot be reserved for:
- Contractors and suppliers
- External Examiners and trainers
- Staff or students
- Deans/Directors on the same campus
- Interviewees
- Paid Visiting Lecturers/tutors.
Please note, spaces are not available for general staff or students even if they are not reserved.
All spaces must be booked in advance by a member of university staff using the Reserved/Corporate Parking booking form(opens in new tab). Please ensure you select the appropriate campus.

Motorcycle parking
There is a dedicated space in the quad area of City Campus that can accommodate up to five motorcycles and is equipped with state-of-the-art Torc Mega III Ground Anchors, meeting the prestigious Sold Secure Gold standard for security.
Membership of the University’s parking scheme is required.
Motorcycles can be parked for free but must not be parked in parking bays – there are various areas of the car parks marked M/B, which can be used to park a motorbike.
You can also park in designated cycle areas (excluding the cycle hub), providing you push your motorbike across any walkways. You are not permitted to drive over footpaths to reach these storage areas.
