This course is closely linked to the needs of the automotive, aerospace, medical and power generation industries.
The course will cover a range of topics at the cutting edge of the discipline using the latest digital tools. Topics will cover core aspects of Electronic Engineering along with their application in design and manufacturing. The project will also develop research skills and you will learn to apply these to apply the latest technologies to real and current engineering problems.
Project work will be a strong focus of the course and you will learn interactively by applying the skills you develop using our recently upgraded laboratory facilities.
Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, group work, laboratory projects and e-learning. We encourage you to develop independent study skills. You will also have opportunities to present ideas to other students and develop concepts within groups.
As well as assessments that count towards your degree, there are also on-going assessments for feedback and consolidating your learning. Assessment methods include exams, multiple-choice tests and projects.

Our typical offer is:

The tuition fee for this course is:
*European Union (EU), EEA (European Economic Area) and Swiss nationals are classed as international, however 21/22 entrants will receive a European student fee scholarship and will pay the (undergraduate) home tuition fee rate of £9,250 for the duration of their studies. An MEng will help you develop into a critical, questioning problem solver who can identify problems and apply technology to improve and optimise industrial processes – these are the skills industry needs.
Our recent graduates have gone on to work for companies such as McLaren Automotive, General Motors, Jaguar, Perkins Engines and Parametrics Technology. Other graduates conduct research within major automotive manufacturers such as Ford, Vauxhall and Nissan.
To further enhance employability we encourage you to apply for a 35-week placement where available, between your second and final year. Placements are subject to availability and interviews are required. They are usually paid, with past students having earned an average salary of £14,000-£18,000 a year depending on location.
Placements are an excellent opportunity to put your learning into practice and understand the context for your new knowledge. The contacts made during placements can also be valuable for future job offers.
Examples of companies that have offered placements to Sunderland students include Jaguar, Vauxhall, Nissan, Caterham Cars, Cummins Engines and Tata Steel.
If you’re looking for extra-curricular opportunities, why not join the University of Sunderland’s Formula Student motorsport team? Each year the team work together to design, build and test a single-seater racing car in preparation for the IMechE Formula Student competition held annually at Silverstone, the home of the British Grand Prix.
The competition encourages many different skills and talents. These include: engineering, management, production, administration, accounting, marketing, advertising, public relations, as well as teamwork and co-operation. It’s ideal for helping to prepare for life after university in any career path, and the team welcome not just engineers but anyone who has an interest in motorsport and wants to improve their skills.
