BSc (Hons) Forensic Psychology

"I chose to study at the University of Sunderland as I wanted a career that I was passionate about, and it was the only university that offered BSc (Hons) Forensic Psychology. However, I did my research and the university also came highly recommended.
Prior to attending university, I was a qualified beauty therapist and Thai massage therapist. I was always interested in psychology, and I wanted to make a difference in the world somehow. When looking at courses, I thought what better than looking at adverse life experiences which may be causal factors as to why people commit crimes to try and prevent it?
My favourite part of the course I studied was everyone I met. I had amazing tutors, lecturers, a fantastic supervisor, and I made great friends. Although I enjoyed the course material, the experiences I had at university were what made my time there amazing.
My advice to prospective students would be to do it! What are you waiting for? The University has staff members and students, especially in the psychology department that are so caring and understanding. They really do become the people that pull you through your degree. I'm not sure I would've got that experience elsewhere.
My confidence and career have blossomed since graduating. I'm currently a co-host of a podcast and coaching platform to help others through mental health with a good friend I met on the course – something I never would've had the confidence to do without doing this course and pushing myself to complete uncomfortable tasks. I've just secured a job working in a trauma-informed school, helping children who've had adverse life experiences, and I've just applied for a doctorate in clinical psychology.
The whole of my degree has helped me in the job I'm currently in. I can inform other staff members and use my knowledge to help children and hopefully be the person that can support them to take a different path in life. The main thing my course taught me is that early intervention can change someone’s life.
To sum up my experience, I had the best educational experience of my life at this university. I made friends for life. I gained confidence by being supported by staff members who took the time to get to know me and guide me through the difficult moments. I learned to believe in myself and trust my intelligence no matter what, as this university showed me I was capable enough to achieve anything."
