"Prior to attending an Open Day at the University, I knew a few people who'd chosen to study here. All of them had fantastic things to say about the LLB (Hons) Law course and the University as a whole. I went to the Open Day and the staff walked me through the important aspects of the course and showed me around campus. It was easy for me to see why so many people fall in love with the north-east.

When I was doing my research, I was amazed at how many different subjects were taught as part of the course. I think that the opportunity to learn about different areas of law has really shaped my career. Right from the outset, the practical elements appealed to me.

The Student Law Clinic provides excellent experience with real clients and legal issues. It mirrors work that you'd be doing at the start of your career in a law firm. For someone who didn't have any legal experience, this was pivotal in gaining employment after I graduated. I also used the mock courtroom on campus often, and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in advocacy. The academics have close links with local firms, and it was clear to me straight away that the degree really focuses on employment after graduation.

The support at Sunderland was amazing, and the teaching is made personal to you. The lecturers take pride in providing bespoke support and have an open-door policy. I also made use of the careers support and used the CV builder service several times.

The best piece of advice I could give to future applicants would be to go to the open days and some taster sessions. You'll see for yourself that the team's expertise is phenomenal – a lot of the teaching team in the Law School have practised or are currently practising.

Since graduating, I've obtained a training contract with a law firm that has close links to the University. I’ve also recently been appointed as the Chair of the Junior Lawyers Division (JLD) for Newcastle and the north-east, and I've hosted networking events to help current students on the course.

I’m looking forward to gaining more knowledge in my field as I progress in my career, I'd love to become a director one day, but I think it’s important to walk before you can run!"
