Preparing for Derby Day

Home / Events / Preparing for Derby Day

Topic - Schools and Colleges

With Sunderland back in the Premier League, one thing football fans in the region are talking about is the return of the Tyne and Wear Derby. This event covers the run up to the derby and what journalists and pundits need to prepare for, both on and off the pitch, for this highly anticipated sporting event.

The rivalry between Sunderland and Newcastle dates back to the 17th century and goes far deeper than sport. Today, the rivalry between the cities is dictated by football, and fans of both clubs will be looking forward to the two league fixtures they can expect this season.

This event will cover how Journalists and Pundits prepare for these games, including:

  • The historical rivalry between the two cities and why this matters
  • The outcomes of previous meetings between the two clubs
  • The current position of the individual clubs, as well as their most recent achievements and challenges
  • Knowledge of players and managers from both clubs

This event will be a hands-on experience of preparing for the upcoming derby as though you are reporting on the game yourself. Guided by our programme leader for BA (Hons) Sport Journalism, Neil Farrington, and current Sports Journalism students, you'll prepare everything you would need if you were working as a journalist or pundit for this game.

The main focus of this event is around researching and preparation, but attendees will get the chance to do some writing and may even get the opportunity to ‘broadcast’ their findings.
