“It's been a lot of hard work to get to this point, but I feel so incredibly grateful and honoured to be given this opportunity so early on in my career"

A University of Sunderland student is set to take over the airwaves after he bags the chance to present on BBC Radio 1 Anthems.
Luke Carr, who studies Sports Journalism at the University, will be on BBC Radio 1 Anthems presenting the show this weekend (22-24 May).
A frequent presenter on the University’s student-led community radio station Spark, Luke said: “I still can't quite believe it. Being on BBC Radio 1 Anthems is a dream come true.
“Since I started Spark in my second year, radio has become a massive part of my life and being on BBC Radio was always one of my biggest goals.
“It's been a lot of hard work to get to this point, but I feel so incredibly grateful and honoured to be given this opportunity so early on in my career.

“Joining the University on my Sports Journalism course was a real step into the unknown but I am so happy I took it. It's allowed me to really find myself and explore this incredible new pathway in radio which I just wouldn't have done if it wasn't for the University and Spark.”
During his time at the University, Luke has previously won gold for best newcomer at the 2025 Student Radio Awards and Demo Factor at the Student Radio Conference 2026 which gave him exposure to industry professions to get this opportunity.
Neil Farrington, Programme Leader for Sports Journalism at the University, said: “You wouldn’t know from Luke’s relaxed style on radio, but he has worked incredibly hard to reach the point where a national broadcaster recognises and backs his talent like this.
“He only woke up to his potential in radio in the second year of his degree, and has grafted tirelessly to develop his skills since then. He can go far.”
Dr Richard Berry, Spark Station Manager and Associate Professor in Radio and Podcasting, said: “Luke is a radio natural. He’s totally authentic on-air and this is why he’s been so successful. Getting onto national radio before you’ve finished your degree is fantastic and I’m sure this will be the first step on the road to great things.”
You can listen to Luke on BBC Radio 1 Anthems at 11am and 2pm on 22-24 May here.
