University of Sunderland students have secured their place as regional representatives for a national travel agent body

University of Sunderland students have been appointed as regional university representatives to a national travel agent association.
Third-year BSc Tourism and Aviation Management students Millea-Ann Pye and Kirsty Lavin have been named Regional Student Representatives at the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) for the University, securing valuable industry mentorships as part of the role.
The ABTA is a trade association for UK Travel agents, tour operators and the wider travel industry, their regional student representative initiative forms part of the association’s ongoing work to strengthen connections between universities and colleges, their students, and the travel industry.
Millea-Ann and Kirsty will regularly engage with experienced mentors from the travel sector, gaining insight into industry operations and exploring some of the key challenges currently facing the sector.
Millea-Ann is being mentored by Learning and Development Team Leader, Julie Simpson from Hays Travel. Millea-Ann said: "From a young age, I’ve been encouraged by my peers to explore the world around me. This gave me love to experience new places and cultures as I enjoy meeting different people and knowing their different stories.

“My studies have grown my interest in the challenges in the industry and how to overcome them. I enjoy learning about new sustainable ways on how to better the industry and how to market these to customers.”
Kirsty Lavin is being mentored by Head of Trade Sales, Nicky Bird from Holiday Best. Kirsty said: “For as long as I can remember, I have been passionate about the industry and have always wanted to make my own contributions through a successful career in the sector. I love to travel and can't wait to explore more of our wonderful world.”

Stephanie Preston, Senior Lecturer in Tourism & Events at the University, said: “Well done to both girls for securing these mentorships and thanks to our educational partner ABTA for providing the opportunity as well as the promotion of our students.”
