The University has achieved a gold stamp for its sustainable practices across its campuses

The University of Sunderland has achieved a gold stamp for its sustainable practices across its campuses.
Building on previous success, the University received a gold certification by Eco Campus, a scheme that aims to improve environmental standards for universities, colleges and education institutions.
To achieve this, the University had to demonstrate a strong commitment to the management and minimisation of the institutions environmental impact, including waste management, energy efficiency and decarbonisation.
Laura Middlemass, Sustainability Manager at the University, said: “This certification shows that we have a commitment to achieving high standards across faculties and functions, and throughout the institution from the University Executive to the daily operations of the facilities and estates maintenance teams.”
This comes as the University continues to reduce its carbon emissions and implement sustainable practices throughout its buildings and teaching.

Since installing new solar panels at St Peter’s Campus and improving heating, lighting and ventilations systems across its buildings, the University has reduced its carbon emissions by 71% since 2006.
Staff from the University were also recognised by the Green Gown Awards for their efforts to implement sustainable practice in their teaching, winning two categories and achieving highly commendable in another.
Following this, the University rose 45 places in this year’s People and Plant University League table, achieving 52nd place.
