In October 2025, the University confirmed it was consulting with students, staff and civic partners to develop a long-term vision for its campus buildings and facilities in Sunderland.

The University City Masterplan is intended to respond to changing student expectations, rapid technological and societal shifts, and the financial environment for the higher education sector. It is also designed to ensure that the University remains competitive, supports student success, and contributes strongly to the city and region it serves.

At its meeting last week, the Board of Governors agreed that the first phase of an externally-supported feasibility study should focus on the viability of bringing the University’s estate together on a single campus in and around the existing City Campus and Sunderland city centre. However, maintaining the existing two campus model – at City Campus and St Peter’s Campus – also remains an option.

The feasibility study will seek to address key priorities raised by staff and students, including delivering high-quality, professions-facing teaching and research; enhancing the University’s civic role; and creating a more coherent campus footprint that encourages collaboration and community.

The first phase of detailed feasibility work is expected to take several months, supported by continued consultation with students, staff and civic partners. The University remains committed to openness, careful evaluation, and sustained engagement with its community throughout this period.

The Board of Governors is expected to receive the findings from the feasibility work in the autumn before making a final decision on which option to pursue.
