The Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Sunderland today paid tribute following the sad news of the death of entrepreneur and philanthropist Helen McArdle CBE.

Sir David Bell said: "On behalf of the University of Sunderland, I extend my deepest sympathies to the McArdle family following the death of Helen McArdle.

"Helen’s generosity, and the values that inspired it, have left an enduring mark on our University.

"Her extraordinary donation, which enabled the creation of the Helen McArdle Nursing and Care Research Institute at the University, was an act of compassion and foresight. It reflected a profound belief in the power of nursing and care to change lives, strengthen communities, and shape a healthier society.

"Through the Institute, Helen’s legacy lives on every day.

"Researchers, practitioners, and students are working together to improve care for people of all ages, develop the workforce, and generate the evidence that makes a difference to practice and policy.

"We will honour Helen’s memory by ensuring the Institute, named in her honour, continues to innovate, lead and thrive."
