Secondary schools

We've moved to a more targeted approach to ensure our pre-16 schools’ outreach interventions are impactful and beneficial to pupils from widening participation backgrounds. By working in this way, we can track pupils’ progress and evidence the impact of our interventions.

As a result, we've selected a cohort of partner secondary schools. We've identified these schools as having the highest number of pupils from backgrounds currently underrepresented in higher education. We've also considered existing partnership arrangements with schools in our targeting criteria.

We're collaborating with our NHS colleagues to host an event for Year 8 pupils from schools in South Tyneside and Sunderland. Visiting pupils will take part in interactive activities led by NHS clinicians. Experts include physiotherapists, occupational therapists, radiographers, speech and language therapists, dieticians, and more. They'll also have the chance to explore our healthcare facilities and gain an insight into higher education and health career pathways.

This year, we're hosting two Discovery Days for the Salters’ Institute’s Festivals of Chemistry. This is an opportunity to inspire pupils about chemistry, motivate them to pursue the subject to an advanced level, and encourage them to see themselves working in and with science in the future. The programme is for Year 10 and 11 pupils and includes both online elements and a campus event at the University.

We're collaborating with the Foundation of Light to create the Esports Challenge. This has been possible through funding from Community Foundation. The programme is for Key Stage 3 pupils and shines a light on British Esports and the University's Esports Event Management degree.

We're planning to host an on-campus multi-school healthcare event in the summer term. We'll promote this event via our newsletters and other promotional channels with full details of dates, content, and how to secure places for your pupils. The programme is for Year 10 pupils.

NERAP provides a range of activities, workshops, and information sessions covering all aspects of student life and access to university. Our team of Higher Education Ambassadors deliver these sessions. We tailor them to meet the requirements of students from Year 2 through to Year 11. We provide informative, engaging activities to ensure your students come away from the session with an understanding of their options.

NERAP are committed to ensuring all students have equal and fair access to Higher Education. We deliver bespoke sessions as well as targeted programmes of activity to support pre and post-16 care experienced young people and young carers to explore their future options. NERAP offers a full suite of activities in the form of ‘A Teacher’s Guide to Inspiring Futures in the North East’ resource for KS2 and KS4 teachers. This will support you to deliver a full introduction to Higher Education in the north-east. Each module contains the lesson plans and presentations you need to deliver an engaging lesson. All worksheets and resources are accessible completely free of charge on the Online Teacher's Resources section of the NERAP website.
