About Ashley Williamson
I am a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science (Data Science) specialising in data science, machine learning, and computer vision. Previously, I have held the role of Programme Leader for MSc Data Science and MSc Applied Data Science.
Prior to joining the University, I worked at other higher education institutions as a lecturer, research fellow, and research assistant in the fields of computer vision and natural language processing, including co-writing, designing, and conducting successful research projects for a variety of organisations such as the Home Office, SBRI, DASA, and Samsung.
I have a passion for ensuring up-to-date teaching curricula, utilising a skills-focused approach with an emphasis on employability and graduate prospects.

Research
As a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science (Data Science), my research is centred on developing practical solutions to real-world problems. My areas of focus include machine learning, computer vision (weapon/threat detection), natural language processing, and reinforcement learning for games.
My approach to research is application-focused, with a strong commitment to improving society through my work. I have previously worked on projects in these areas for organisations such as the Home Office, DASA, SBRI, and Samsung, using machine learning, AI, computer vision, and reinforcement learning for dialogue systems (natural language processing).
