About Dr Christabel Ihedike
I hold a PhD from the University of Sunderland. Prior to my doctoral research study, I obtained an MSc in Public Health from the University of Bedfordshire. Immediately after my doctoral research, I joined the University of Sunderland as a Lecturer in Public Health.
I teach a range of public health modules across the MSc Public Health.
I am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in recognition of attainment against the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and learning in higher education.
I am a recipient of several awards and scholarships, including the State Honours’ Award, Nigeria President’s National Youth Service Corps Honours’ Award (highest honours’ award conferred to a Nigerian Youth), Plus Award for serving and supporting students in Sunderland. I have also worked with Nigeria’s Ministry of Health as a Scientific and Public Health Officer.
I am eager to teach, and research collaborations and activities that heighten health and wellbeing.
I am also passionate about outreach and non-academic activities across different societal sectors and enjoy giving health, environment, and sustainability talks.
In my spare time, I play Scrabble, Chess, and love music and travelling.
Teaching and supervision
I teach MSc Public Health.
I supervise MSc Public Health dissertations and I am currently module leader for:
- HSSM72 – Social Determinants of Global Health and Health Systems
- PHP301 – Green Policy Versus Economic Reality: Clean Air For All
Interests
My core interests are air quality, respiratory health (diseases), environmental and health inequalities, global health with a special interest in neglected tropical diseases, and cardiopulmonary diseases.

My research is on the air pollution effect on respiratory disease, focusing on COPD and asthma. Other research areas include:
