About Clare Louise Teunissen
I am a Lecturer in Sunderland Business School, where I have been supporting and teaching students for over six years. With more than 25 years of experience across the hospitality, tourism, and aviation sectors, I focus on bridging the gap between education and the professional world. I am particularly dedicated to widening participation, offering tailored mentoring to international students and local learners to help them feel at home in a university setting.
As an educator and coach, I regularly integrate social media, visuals and podcasts into teaching and help students build industry networks and stay connected to current trends. My approach is rooted in inclusive digital strategies, ensuring that learning is accessible and modern. Outside of teaching, I regularly maintain active links with hospitality businesses as a consultant, which allows me to bring consultancy case studies directly into the classroom.
Teaching and supervision
As a Lecturer, Mentor and Tutor with over six years of experience at the University, my teaching practice is defined by a research-informed and industry-aligned approach that bridges the gap between academic theory and professional practice. I specialise in delivering complex modules across the business, hospitality, tourism, and aviation sectors, catering to diverse cohorts from local students to large international student groups.
My methodology prioritises digital pedagogy and a coaching-led philosophy, where I actively integrate social media strategies and podcasts to foster vibrant industry networks and ensure students remain at the forefront of global trends.
By maintaining an active consultancy practice, I am able to provide strategic insights into leadership, operational efficiency, and guest experience, ensuring that curriculum delivery directly addresses the evolving needs of the global service economy.
This commitment to excellence and widening participation has led to consistent annual nominations for university wide teaching awards and a measurable impact on National Student Survey (NSS) outcomes.
