About Daniel Taylor
I am an Academic Tutor in the School of Psychology. I have been a member of staff since 2019 when I joined the department as a PhD researcher. However, I first came to Sunderland in 2014 as an undergraduate student. My area of interest focused on understanding human sexuality with my PhD focusing on BDSM and kink-related behaviour.
Teaching and supervision
I primarily teach across modules with an evolutionary psychology or individual differences focus. I also teach BSc (Hons) Psychology with Integrated Foundation Year which focuses on understanding the application of psychology in the real world. You may see me teach across:
- PSY122 – Genes to Mind
- PSY140 – Being a Psychologist
- PSY267 – Cradle to Grave
- PSY268 – Meet the Relatives
- PSY369 – Dark Personalities
- PSY380 – Research to Reality
- FDN039 – Contemporary Issues in Psychology
Research
I am currently carrying out my PhD project which aims to develop a measure that can differentiate between different motivations for engaging in BDSM (Bondage and Discipline, Domination and Submission, Sadism and Masochism).
More broadly my interests lie in human sexuality including non-traditional sexual behaviour, sexual orientation, and pornography.
I am a mixed-methods enthusiast, who values a flexible approach however I had initially developed an interest in research through evolutionary and developmental psychology as well as individual differences.
