About Dr David Nelson
I have been a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Computer Science since 1999.
My PhD and subsequent research has primarily been in the area of databases, with focused interests in novel data models (such as NoSQL) for Big Data and in database teaching and learning.
I also participate in reach-out with external companies, I am a KTP champion for the university, and am actively involved in Knowledge Transfer projects with a number of companies and SMEs in North-East England and our first ever KTP with London campus. I am currently working on three KTP projects and in total have have worked on around 12 KTP/TCS and CIP projects.
My main teaching lies in the area of databases and data technologies but I have also taught a number of other subjects during my time at Sunderland, including Data Science, Big Data, C# and Python Programming, Computer Science Foundations, Information Systems, Networking, Computer Hardware and Operating Systems. I am also programme leader for our MSc programmes in Computing and Applied Computing.

Research
My PhD and subsequent research has primarily been in the area of databases, with focused interests in novel data models (e.g., NoSQL) for Big Data and Data Science and database pedagogy.
I am currently co-supervisor for one PhD.
I have successfully supervised two PhD's in the area of data privacy and sensor data visualisation, and one Professional Doctorate in the area of high performance computing and learning and teaching.
I have been a member of the steering committees for the British International Conference on Databases and the Workshops on Teaching, Learning and Assessment of Databases.
I have extensive expertise in reach-out with external companies, having worked on Knowledge Transfer projects with a number of companies and SMEs in the North East of England. Three of the more recent projects I have worked on with Orchidsoft, Imprint Creative Print Solutions and Cellular Solutions have all been rated as Outstanding. I acurrently actively involved in three KTP projects with Verve Healthcare, Training in Care and iPac Packaging Innovations.
