About David Swift
I joined the University of Sunderland as a Lecturer in Primary Education in January 2021. Prior to this, I had 18 years of experience in primary school teaching, including six years as a head teacher. I've taught across the whole primary range and have gained experience in the wider aspects of education such as safeguarding, supporting vulnerable families, and the importance of pastoral care in schools.
Throughout my time in teaching, I've always been an advocate of schools supporting and training the next generation of teachers. I have a range of experience in supporting trainees and newly qualified teachers and I'm passionate about enabling all involved in education to reach their full potential.
My specialism is in primary science but I also have a keen interest in RE, music, mathematics, and literacy.
Teaching and supervision
I teach across the Initial Teacher Training courses including the BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS and PGCE, as well as on the BA (Hons) Education Studies course. I'm also a personal tutor and University Based Mentor for trainees on placement.
