About Dr James Scott

In 2006, following work with Durham University, which considered the effectiveness of performance measurement in local governance, and work with the Home Office on the night-time economy and licensing laws, I joined the University of Sunderland.

Since then, I have led the Hospitality, Events, Aviation and Tourism department and developed courses in our Sunderland, London, and Hong Kong campuses and with our partners in Malaysia (SEGi), Nepal (ISMT), and Singapore (MDIS).

In 2021, I was appointed Head of School – Law and Tourism. During this time, new courses were developed in Esports and Advanced Legal Practice, a new Moot Court and Student Law Clinic were developed, and performance in terms of teaching, research and recruitment improved.

I now hold the role of Academic Director for Transnational Education and oversee global partnerships in Botswana, Cyprus, Greece, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Singapore, Tajikistan, Trinidad and Tobago, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

My research interests include legislation around the night-time economy and liminal spaces for tourism in the developing world.

I am a travel enthusiast and have enjoyed hospitality and events in 78 countries.
