About Dr Ellen Tullo
I work as a specialty doctor in geriatric medicine, with an interest in Parkinson’s Disease and comprehensive geriatric assessment.
My role at Sunderland medical school is to support undergraduate students and postgraduate trainees into clinical academic research. This may take the form of an undergraduate vacation studentship, intercalation or as part of the formal NIHR pathway for academic clinical trainees.
I work with our Clinical Academic Training Office (CATO) to create opportunities for students to become engaged with research, ranging from biomedical lab-based projects through to medical education scholarship. I coordinate our cohort of NIHR academic clinical fellows (ACFs) training across the region in a range of specialties.
Teaching and supervision
I lead sessions across the undergraduate MBChB programme including clinical research design, academic skills, and academic careers.
I also contribute to our MMedEd programme as an assessor and project supervisor.
Research
My research interests are broad – I have a PhD in medical education focussing on the optimisation of undergraduate medical education about dementia. I am committed to improving health professionals’ education about ageing and multiple longterm conditions globally, and have published on this widely, collaborating with colleagues nationally and internationally.
I am also interested in medical education more generally, medical ethics, patient and public involvement and the history of medicine.
