Dr Jo Malkin

I am a medical microbiologist by background and Senior Lecturer in Medical Undergraduate Assessment and Microbiology at the School of Medicine, where I am also Clinical OSCE Co-Lead for Phases 1 and 2.

I graduated from Leicester Medical School in 2001 and completed house officer training in Peterborough and Leicester. I hold an MSc in Molecular Microbiology from the University of Nottingham, awarded with distinction, and the MRCPath in Medical Microbiology and Virology from the Royal College of Pathologists. My specialist registrar training in microbiology took place across Leicester and the north-east, and while in Leicester, I researched improved detection methods for a local outbreak strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

I have more than two decades of NHS experience, including 10 years as a Consultant Medical Microbiologist at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, where I was Antimicrobial Stewardship Lead, overseeing the responsible use of antibiotics across the Trust.

Antimicrobial resistance is my central academic interest, with a focus on education and on raising awareness more widely.
