About Dr John Stephens
My career in physiotherapy has spanned clinical roles in the Royal Navy and the NHS, and academic roles in pre and post-registration healthcare in the UK and internationally. My PhD was based on curriculum design for pre-registration physiotherapy and other healthcare professions.
I have an active role in teaching and learning quality assurance through External Examiner and programme approval panel roles, along with involvement with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.
Teaching and supervision
I have broad teaching experience across physiotherapy (and interprofessional) education that includes acute cardiorespiratory care, rehabilitation, clinical decision-making skills, leadership and service development, and research methods.
I also have experience in programme development and management in the UK and internationally.
My research supervision is broad in terms of subject areas, largely qualitative research projects at BSc and MSc level.
Research
My PhD (by publication) was based around the development of a 'Dialogical Curriculum Framework' for pre-registration physiotherapy / healthcare.
Research subject areas include curriculum design and education within physiotherapy, interprofessional education, pulmonary rehabilitation, and stroke rehabilitation.
Research methodology interests are qualitative in nature and include work framed by complexity, symbolic interactionism, and influenced by the ideas of Bohm, Derrida, Foucault and Goffman.
