About Dr Julia Janfeshar Nobari
I am a Senior Lecturer in Accounting and Finance and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), with an active research profile centered on Business and Management. Since joining the University of Sunderland in 2014, I have served as the Programme Leader for the MSc Finance and Management, where I lead curriculum development and maintain rigorous professional standards for Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) accreditations across global campuses, including London, and Hong Kong.
I hold a PhD from Newcastle University, funded by an ESRC-CASE Studentship, which focused on accountability and social impact measurement for third-sector housing organisations. As an active researcher, I supervise a diverse range of PhD and DBA candidates across global campuses, covering topics from Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) integration to corporate governance. My commitment to the region is further reflected in my history of securing funding for community projects and serving as a Trustee and Treasurer for multicultural organisations in the North East, ensuring that financial expertise serves a clear social purpose.
I am currently the Faculty Champion (Lead) for Strategy, People and Research Environment (SPRE) for REF 2029, overseeing Units of Assessment 17, 18, and 24.
My academic career is built on a foundation of real-world experience, having previously worked as an auditor and accountant in both the UK and the Middle East. This dual perspective allows me to bridge the gap between complex financial theory and practical application for my students. Beyond the classroom, my research interests are deeply interdisciplinary, exploring the financialisation of daily life, business ethics, corporate governance, and the intersection of finance and gender. I have a strong track record of collaborative research, including investigating EU law regarding payments to governments and evaluating change management models in UK schools.
