About Ms Lorna Wellingsclare

I am a Lecturer in Secondary Education here at the University's International Teacher Education and Professional Development team. My background is in school leadership. Having worked in schools for over a decade, my expertise lies in the leadership and transformation of whole-school curriculum, teaching and learning.

I have extensive experience working with teachers and leaders at various career stages to develop best practice. I am also an experienced classroom practitioner in English.

I completed a Master's in Education while working as a senior leader, connecting a passion for excellence in classroom practice with an interest in academic research. This built upon a career-long commitment to professional learning. This includes master's degrees in English Language & Literature and Women Writing & Gender, alongside various leadership and teaching qualifications.

As an early-career researcher, my interests lie in disciplinary literacy. That's the discipline-specific nature of concepts and implications for English instruction. This is underpinned by a long-standing professional focus on pedagogies which support young readers to develop critical literacy. Enabling them to understand and enjoy rich texts from diverse contexts.

My broader academic interests encompass the function and diversification of literary concepts in an increasingly digital and connected world. I am particularly interested in how pluralistic literacies shape the way that literacy is defined, valued and developed.
