Dr Matthew Ridley

I am Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences, focusing on pathophysiology and molecular cancer biology.

I graduated with a BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences degree from Northumbria University before then moving to Newcastle University to compete my MRes Cancer. I then completed my PhD in Pancreatology from the University of Liverpool, focusing on the role of cell polarity genes in pancreatic cancer. During my PhD I also worked in the Outbreak Lab as part of a large COVID-19 clinical trial - ISARIC-4C.

I joined the University of Sunderland as a Laboratory Technician in 2023 then moved to the School of Medicine in 2025 for my first academic role (fixed-term) as Senior Lecturer in Physiology and Academic Lead - Year 1 before joining the School of Nursing and Health Sciences.

My research interests include using cell-based models to understand the function roles of genes involved in pancreatic cancer development. I also have an interest in pedagogical research working with internal and external collaborators at Northumbria University.
