About Dr Rosie Dew
I am a Senior Lecturer in Physiology and Year Lead for year 1 medical students.
I have experience working on a range of health-related research projects, including large-scale cancer projects using Public Health England data, and projects with paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS), and hospital clinicians.
Teaching and supervision
As a Senior Lecturer in Physiology, with a special interest in nutritional and gastrointestinal physiology, I have the opportunity to teach content associated with ingestion, digestion, absorption, and excretion of food throughout phase 1 of the undergraduate MBChB Medicine course. I am currently unit lead for Inputs and Output (Unit 10).
I have experience supervising undergraduate biomedical and medical sciences students, MSc Nursing and public health students, and MRes Epidemiology students. I am currently co-supervisor for a PhD student investigating factors that influence the control of hypothyroidism and potential excess mortality associated with over-diagnosis in the elderly population.

Research
Previous research projects have included:
- Randomised controlled trials (RCTs): Use of a resuscitation device during out of hospital cardiac arrest; Impact of pacing therapy in patients with syncope
- Cancer epidemiology: The effect of deprivation on treatment and survival in colorectal cancer patients; The role of the route of diagnosis on survival in all patients with lung, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers diagnosed in England between 2006 and 2017
- Cross-sectional survey studies: Public automated external defibrillator (AED) and CPR use; Enablers and challenges to inclusion and access to services for disabled children and young people in times of austerity across Europe
- Service evaluations: Comparison of manual versus mechanical CPR; Referral systems used by GPs
- Qualitative studies: Factors affecting thyroid control in hypothyroid patients; Barriers to hospital avoidance in frail and elderly patients
