About Sue Brent
I am a Registered Nurse, Registered Nurse Teacher, and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I have 34 years of experience as a nurse, 21 years in clinical practice in the NHS, and 13 years experience of working in Higher Education (HE).
I began my career as a nurse in 1984, and practiced as an Oncology Nurse in the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust, then moved into an education role in the Trust in 2002.
I am currently the Head of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences at the University providing strategic academic leadership and operational management in line with faculty plans and objectives.
The Sunderland School of Nursing, which launched in 2016, is my greatest professional achievement to date. The pre-registration adult nursing course in partnership with local NHS Foundation Trusts, showcases an innovative approach to delivery of pre-registration training and does not attract funding from Health Education England North East (HEE NE), being only the second course of its kind in the country to be totally self-funded via the Student Loans system. It is also the very first in the UK to be directly linked to a School of Pharmacy, developing nurses’ skills and excellence in medicine management.
Teaching and supervision
My teaching focuses on nursing, professional practice, and clinical skills.
Interests
My research focuses on the cancer workforce and the impact on service delivery, culture, and compassion in healthcare.
