About Tom Stephenson
I joined the University of Sunderland in 2021 as a Senior Lecturer in Primary Education. I studied for a PGCE in 2009, followed by a master's degree in education.
I've been fortunate enough to work in some brilliant schools across the region in various capacities. Although I've primarily taught in Key Stage 2 (including seven years in Year 6), through my experiences as a school leader, I have knowledge of the whole primary curriculum, including Early Years.
During my 11-year primary teaching career, I've been an English lead, Key Stage 2 lead, and Assistant Headteacher for five years. One part of the job I loved was being able to mentor trainee teachers and newly qualified teachers in schools, helping them to develop and grow into the profession.
Through my work as English lead, I've developed an abiding passion for the subject – particularly the promotion and development of reading in schools.
I look forward to using my experience in school to help support and enable trainees to become confident, well-equipped teachers, ready to embark on a wonderfully rewarding career.
