Stalking is a complex and misunderstood form of harassment. It's frequently minimised in everyday conversation and mispresented in the media. This event brings together experts to understand stalking from multiple perspectives, including:
- Journalism
- Law
- Policing
- Criminology.
This event offers insight into how such crimes are investigated, prosecuted and reported in the media. You'll also explore how they're understood in broader social and legal contexts.
During this event, we'll be exploring the tragic case of Alice Ruggles. She was a young woman murdered in 2016 by her ex-partner following a duration of sustained stalking and harassment. This case highlights the dangers of stalking and the challenges victims face in seeking protection. It also shows the importance of legal and policing responses to such crimes.
Join us for a powerful and thought-provoking interdisciplinary event. Our experts will examine the case from multiple perspectives. They'll offer critical insight into how such crimes are:
- Investigated
- Prosecuted
- Reported in the media
- Understood in broader social and legal contexts.
Participants will leave with a comprehensive understanding of crime, investigation, and reporting processes. The challenges faced by different groups will also be explored. These include law enforcement, legal professionals, and journalists. Also, they'll understand how media coverage can influence both public opinion and the legal proceedings of a criminal case.
We welcome school group bookings from Year 12/13 as well as individual sign-ups.
Please note that this event will include discussion of stalking, harassment, and violence.
